What are you going to do?

The Senior Technical Superintendent is responsible for the technical condition of the vessels, ensuring compliance with classification, SOLAS, ISM, ISPS, IMO, flag state, port state, and any other standards as advised by management. Additionally, the Senior Technical Superintendent plays a more active role in project vessels and is involved in newbuilding projects. The Senior is also expected to mentor and advise both the Medior and Junior Technical Superintendents.

Hierarchical: Senior Technical Superintendent reports to the Technical Manager

Functional: Senior Technical Superintendent is responsible for the training process of the Junior Technical Superintendent and advises the (medior) Technical Superintendent. Also responsible for supervising the crewmembers as third parties.

Job description

Administration

  • Oversee the technical and fleet administration including the vessel certification, to ensure efficient fleet operations.
  • Maintain and update the Planned Maintenance System to ensure seamless operations both on board and ashore.
  • Prepare and manage dock plans and specifications for onboard repairs, providing insights into costs and time estimates.
  • Ensure the timely creation and processing of service/purchase orders for repairs, and guarantee the delivery of supplies and services.

Technical aspects

  • Monitor the Planned Maintenance System to ensure maintenance activities are carried out promptly and effectively.
  • Supervise and manage subcontractors to ensure high-quality standards, compliance, and timely execution of projects.
  • Oversee the execution of technical activities by the crew on board, ensuring they meet company standards.
  • Coordinate and prepare arrangements for third-party repairs and maintenance.
  • Supervise and manage dry docking and repairs, ensuring efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and the highest quality work by all involved parties.
  • Conduct vessel visits to manage and assess maintenance activities on board, ensuring the crew carries out necessary tasks.
  • Provide recommendations and take proactive actions related to QHSE reporting for the vessels, aiming to enhance safety and quality standards on board.

Authorities

  • Delegate activities to crew members and/or third parties to optimize the efficiency and effectiveness of operations (e.g., maintenance, repairs).
  • Ensure repairs and maintenance are performed by third parties or crew members in compliance with established standards and timelines.
  • Delegate duties and provide guidance to the Junior and (Medior) Technical Superintendents.
  • Take a leading role in purchasing and contracting repairs and maintenance to third parties, ensuring optimal terms and service quality.
  • Play an active and leadership role in project vessels, newbuilding projects, and any special technical initiatives.
  • Mentor and provide technical advice to Medior and Junior Technical Superintendents, to stimulate their growth and development.

Complexity

  • Beyond standardized work and routine tasks, there are various complex issues related to the vessels that need to be resolved. It is expected that these tasks can be handled independently, but when encountering difficulties, advice should be sought from management.
  • Proven experience in troubleshooting and overseeing maintenance of Dynamic Positioning (DP) systems.
  • Strong adaptability to the ever-changing maritime industry and changing operational conditions

Error detection & consequences

  • Responsible for their part of the fleet, ensuring that their vessels operate safely, remain technically sound, and possess the required certifications to comply within the regulations. End responsible is still the Technical Manager.
  • Mistakes can lead to increased costs, delivery delays, or operational disruptions for the fleet.

Decision making

  • Responsible for their part of the fleet and consults with the Technical Manager when necessary.
  • Given the high operational and financial value of project vessels, undetected errors or incorrect technical decisions may result in costly delays, increased repair expenses, and potential impact on project timelines

Social interactions & Communication

  • Expect to communicate effectively with direct colleagues in the technical department and vessel crew to ensure transparency, as well as with other operational departments to facilitate a smooth process. Additionally, the Senior Technical Superintendent plays a key role in maintaining strong relationships with external service suppliers and managing client interactions for project vessels, ensuring clear and professional communication at all organizational levels.

Leadership

  • Not responsible for direct leadership, but is responsible for managing and guiding the crew on board of the designated fleet of vessels, while also expected to share and offer their knowledge to Medior and Junior colleagues to support their development and act as a mentor.

Other relevant skills

  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet strict deadlines in a high-pressure maritime environment.

What do we ask?

  • HBO Maritime academy/Nautical institute, or equivalent thinking and working level.
  • 7 - 10 years nautical experience as Technical Superintendent or nautical engineer.
  • DP qualified and experienced
  • Extensive experience in task delegation and oversight.
  • Able to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team
  • Administratively skilled.
  • Digitally fluent.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English
